2009 - the year of the florist

No wild flowers for you?
If you live in a town or do not have the opportunity to pick flowers or to gather other arranging materials, containers and vases assume a special importance. (If you have a garden with lots of materials the container is not so important because even an oven dish can be disguised by having the flowers and foliage cover the front so that it is quite invisible.) My advice is to buy one really nice container that will hold plenty of water and which you will find easy to arrange. Should you have to have all your flowers delivered Banyule then I suggest you should get a vase that will look pretty with just a bunch of freesias, baby carnations, or a few stems of single chrysanthemums. They are all easily obtainable and long-lasting.

Design lines
The main lines in a traditional flower design include the outline, which refers to the contours, and is created with spike materials; the focal point line, which is the main line of graded flowers, forming the centre of interest, and for which a mass form is used, and the transitional lines, which link the two contrasting spike and mass forms. Smaller flowers and foliage are arranged in sequences (lines) of graded sizes, buds being placed towards the outer edge, and fuller Kew flowers at the centre. Other materials can then be placed at various levels to fill in the gaps in the design. Follow these simple guidelines to create some inspired floral arrangements.

Using Wildflowers
It can be great fun to go walking in the country and gather material to bring home. Much that can be found is very attractive and you can devise some stunning arrangements. However, be aware of any local conservation rules that apply to your area and laws that protect some species. Botanical gardens and National Parks are out of bounds and you could incur a hefty fine if you try to break the rules.

As many country plants have become quite scarce in some areas, it is very important to pick material with care. Never take the whole plant. Only cut what you need and if your source is a small group only takes one or two pieces. Don’t feel too guilty about doing your local Sutter Creek florist out of business because it is unlikely they would stock too many wild flowers anyway.
When you are planning your trip to the country, take a large polythene bag lined with damp newspaper and a pair of scissors or secateurs with you. When you have cut your material, place it on the paper as quickly as possible, seal the bag and keep it in a cool place.

Seasonal Flowers
Flowers most often requested by season:
Summer

Foxgloves, sweet peas, roses, snapdragons, lilies and liatris are among the flowers that are associated with this time of year. Cool blues and white are appealing during summer, when the weather is hot and sultry.
Autumn
Russets, warm reds and oranges are the colours that we associate with the cooler temperatures of autumn, chrysanthemums, dahlias, asters and nerines being among the seasonal flowers delivered Islington regularly at this time.
Winter
Snowdrops, winter-flowering jasmine and viburnums are associated with this bleak time of year, along with evergreens.

Longer lasting flowers
In the last ten years there has been a considerable increase in consumer purchases of cut flowers. Worldwide, the sales of flowers can be numbered in the billions. Mirroring this growth in the flower industry has been extensive scientific research into the post-harvest care of cut flowers and foliage. For many customers the quality of the flowers is determined by their longevity; the professional florist will need to ensure that cut flowers achieve their maximum vase life if consumers are to be kept satisfied with their flower delivery Montpelier.

Begonias
There are many mixed packets of begonia seed on the market and these, given a bed to themselves, provide great pleasure and constant colour from the first flowering to the first frost, with little or no special care, apart from watering. If you like the more unusual then it might be worth trying ‘Coco Ducolour’. It does need careful planting and placing to show it off to the best advantage, but the white flowers edged with red and the well-shaped plants with their bronze foliage really appeal to me. These are not your typical flower that you would see in an average florists Kitts Green shop and can be difficult to get hold of.

Go Roses
To show your eternal gratitude to someone, when just a simple thank you will not suffice, consider going for roses. These flowers will certainly express your extreme gratitude to someone. Maybe someone has done you a good turn, or helped you out in some way, then these should do the trick. Saying thank you is a wonderful human trait, and you will be rewarded for your good nature.

  • Pink Roses – gratitude, admiration, appreciation, friendship, thankfulness and a whole host of other commendable sentiments. Sending flowers Gabalfa is the ideal way to show someone how much you appreciate what they have done for you.

  • Peach Roses – gratitude, appreciation, admiration are all conveyed through these

  • Yellow Roses – express joy and friendship
